از زمان های بسیار دور تا کنون، روش های مختلفی برای انتقال آب در خلاف جهت جاذبه به وجود آمده است. پمپ وسیله ای است که با استفاده از انرژی انتقال و فشرده سازی سیال را انجام می دهد. نخستین پمپ های ساخته شده، مربوط به چند هزار سال پیش است. 

مصریان باستان برای آبیاری یک نوع چرخ آبی ساختند که سطل هایی برای انتقال آب دور آن تعبیه شده بود (شکل 1-1) و بیش از 2000 سال پیش مخترع یونانی به نام Ctebius پمپی مشابه برای پمپاژ آب ساخت.

 در همان دوران ارشمیدس، ریاضی دان یونانی، وسیله ای را اختراع کرد که اکنون به عنوان پیچ ارشمیدس شناخته می شود. این تیوب مارپیچ به صورت شیب دار قرار داده می شود و برای پمپاژ آب، باید با دست و یا وسیله دیگری چرخانده شود (شکل 1-2).

تاریخچه پمپ های گریز از مرکز

پمپ های سانتریفیوژ رایج ترین پمپ های مورد استفاده هستند. این پمپ ها به دلیل طراحی ساده، بازده بالا، بازه وسیع هد و دبی، دبی خروجی یکنواخت و کاربری آسان، کاربرد گسترده ای در صنایع مختلف دارند.

پمپ های مدرن کنونی در اواخر قرن هفدهم و اوایل قرن هجدهم میلادی به وجود آمدند. مهندس انگلیسی توماس ساوری، دنیس پایین، بلک اسمیت و توماس نیوکام  در ساخت یک پمپ آبی که برای حرکت پیستون از بخار آب استفاده می کرد، مشارکت داشتند. اولین کاربرد این پمپ آبی، پمپاژ آب به خارج از معدن بود.

پیدایش اولین پروانه سانتریفیوژ به فیزیک دان و مخترع فرانسوی دنیس پایین در سال 1689 مربوط می شود. ایده پایین، ایجاد ورتکس های اجباری درون یک پوسته دایره ای یا حلزونی به وسیله چرخش پروانه بود. او پمپی ساخت که پره های پروانه به کار رفته در آن صاف و بدون انحنا بود. در ادامه تئوری پایین،در سال 1838کامبز و در سال 1846 جانسون  اولین پمپ 3 طبقه را ساخت. در سال 1849 گوین  یک پمپ سانتریفیوژ چند طبقه ساخت و برای اولین بار این پمپ را در یک سیستم واقعی تست کرد.

به دلیل هزینه ساخت کم و توانایی پمپاژ بالا، پیشرفت پمپ های سانتریفیوژ به سرعت صورت پذیرفت. اما باید توجه داشت افزایش کاربرد این گونه از پمپ ها به دلیل پیشرفت اساسی در موتورهای الکتریکی و ماشین های احتراق داخلی بوده است.
